A Lesson From: Ancient Athens

Updated: Sep 8, 2019

Psalms 139:7

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?

This is David's prayer. He was on to something.

In the Book of Acts, Paul found himself in Greece. Athens to be specific. He saw idols everywhere. He was deeply troubled by this. Why were idols everywhere? They needed their gods to be accessible. After all, how could they worship unless their gods were with them? Somebody heard Paul debating about a foreign god so Paul was invited to speak to the high council of the city, the Areopagus. When he walked through the city, he saw something. There was an altar with the inscription, “To the unknown God". That was what Paul needed. He found a practical way to speak to the people in a way they could understand. He said I want to talk you about THAT God. I know Him. Then he preached about our Creator and the resurrection.

One of the most important things He says about God in his discourse is that…”He is not far from any one of us.” That is what I want to share with you today. God is never far from you. We don’t need idols everywhere because God is not limited to geographic location.

God is always with us because He is everywhere.

Man can only be in one place but God is everywhere.

This means wherever you go the Spirit of God goes with you. This is true even for the places you cannot go. God is there already loving the people you wish you could be with. Even when you die and you cannot be here to comfort your family, God’s love will still be on earth available for each of us.

God is even in the possibilities of the places you could be. If you are going on a plane that will fly high above the earth, if you find yourself on a boat on a wave in the ocean, God is there. If you know you will be in a hospital room soon, God is already there getting everything ready. Remember Jesus' words, "I go prepare a place for you..." It's true. God is not far from any of us.

We have an everywhere God. Why?

Acts 17:27-28

God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’

We live in His presence. We move in his presence. We exist in his presence. And yet...even when we die. We will be with Him in His presence. Now that's good news isn't?
